Camel Safari in Ladakh

If
you think that the ' Ship of the Desert' alias camel is only confined to the
deserts of the plain then you are highly mistaken because camels are one of
the chief modes of transportation even in the cold deserts of Ladakh since
time immemorial. Experiencing the camel safaris are memorable in itself as
one gets to enjoy the rolling and wobbly movements of the camel while
exploring the rugged mountain terrains. One can fly high in the air of
excitement in the very Nubra Valley of
Ladakh.
The shaggy double-humped Bactrian camel is one such thing in Ladakh that
fascinates the tourists visiting the place. In ancient times Central Asian
traders used these camels as pack animals but later their roles were also
extended to transportation purposes. Today for almost all the tourists
camels have become a major means of transport. Deskit and Hunder are the
popular locations for this activity. Camel safaris gives one the opportunity
to capture the spectacular scenes of the Ladakhi valleys, villages and the
colourful Buddhist monasteries or Gompas. The magical realm of the desert
can be well explored on the camel back, in fact it can said to be a novel
way to experience and discover the desert.
Camel Safari Routes
Camel Safaris generally cover the area around
Jaisalmer,
Bikaner and
Jodhpur,
commonly termed as desert circuit. The duration of the safaris can vary from
one day trip to two weeks trip. Generally big towns are not on the route
though there is no definite route that one needs to adopt. While on a camel
safari in the region of Ladakh one needs to be efficient in the matter of
route navigation. One must have such caravan riders who not only know how to
study the stars but also recognise the shifting sands of the terrain.
Camel Safari offers a relaxing and exciting vacation. If you have been
accustomed to horse riding then a day-long camel ride won't be very tiring.
Since the gait of the camel is quite different, it may take some time to get
used to it.
