Nagaur Cattle Fair

The Nagaur Fair is most commonly called as a Cattle Fair. Usually held
around the months of January and February, the four day festival fires a
spirit of conviviality in visitors and locals alike. The fair plays host to
a variety of guests, among whom are the stately and handsome Marwari horses
with in curving ears that arch at the tips like a lyre. Then there are the
honey- coloured Nagauri bullocks, long lashed camels with embroidered stoles
on their hump and bells around their ankles and cows with ornately painted
horns. Apart from these, there are other attractions that add to the allure
of the Cattle Fair -well, here I am talking about the dusky Rajasthani
women, looking very stunning in their flowing skirts, heavily adorned in
silver jewellery and vibrant beads and the macho men donning colourful
turbans and gold earrings swaggering with royal insouciance.
The Fair Fervour
The Mirchi Bazaar of the Cattle Fair is also worth a glance. It is
considered to be the largest market for red chillies in the country, which
appears as a shock of red against the flat monotony of the desert sand. One
can also find beautiful women sitting in the Mirchi Bazaar and haggling for
a good price. Well amidst all these we certainly cannot skip from the cattle
in the cattle fair. There are about 70,000 cattle that are traded in this
annual affair.
Generally at dusk Nagaur is caught up in music and dance. The snake dancers
dressed in black, pirouette seductively and the fire eaters eat, um, fire.
The transformation of the fair from a bustling trade centre to a cultural
fair by night is a magic in itself.
