Pushkar Fair
The sleepy little township of Pushkar in Rajasthan comes alive with a
riot of colors and a frenzied burst of activity,every November.

This small township and the sacred lake of Pushkar is II kms. away from
Ajmer. The road to Pushkar winds through the Nag Pahar (Snake Mountain),
leading to the ancient lake. According to religious texts this lake is
supposed to have appeared miraculously when a lotus flower fell from the
hands of Lord Brahma and dropped into this valley.
The Pulsating beats of vivid images of the Sacred Brahma land, Pushkar
brings alive the rich tradition of Rajasthan enhancing the glory of the
golden sand. Spectacular Fair Ground in the month of Kartik (November month)
with bedecked Camels, decorated cattles, adventure competitions,
breathtaking events, jostling rustic crowd, meditating sadhus, holy dip,
vivid stalls, exotic fair, colorful desert, so typical, so obvious, It can
be nothing else but Pushkar Fair.
Pushkar is among the five main places of pilgrimage mentioned in the Hindu
scriptures. It has a large number of temples including one of the two
temples dedicated to Brahma in India.

The Kartik fair at Pushkar is mainly a bathing fair in the lake regarded as
the holiest of holies by the Hindus is the biggest of all fairs. It attracts
more than one lakh people.
Activities at Pushkar Fair
There are puppet shows, musicians, singers, folk dancers and circus
entertainers. Camels, cattle and horses change hands in their hundreds and
camels are also raced, used for camel polo and stacked with people for
'loading the camel' contests. Vendors selling food and handicrafts are
everywhere and everything stays animated late into the moonlit nights. Our
accommodation at the fair is on full board in a private encampment of luxury
tents with ensuite bathrooms and showers. In addition to touring India's
magical 'golden triangle' this arrangement also seeks to explain the basic
tenets of Hinduism, offers several opportunities to witness the production
of local handicrafts and endeavours to facilitate as much contact with local
people as possible.
Cattle Trading
The Pushkar fair is synonymous to the cattle fair. So there are camels,
horses, cows, goats, and sheep; all decked up to be sold and purchased. The
proud cattle owners throng Pushkar, traveling across the golden sands of the
various places in Rajasthan. There is bargaining, presence of several
popular breeds and the parading of the well bred, highly decorated cattle.
As is believed about Pushkar Fair is the world's largest camel fair.
Access
By air: The nearest international airport is in Delhi. From Mumbai,
Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Air Sahara run daily flights to the Indian
capital city.
The nearest domestic airport is Jaipur. Ajmer is 130 km southwest of
Jaipur; Pushkar is 11 km from Ajmer.
By train: There are regular train services to Ajmer from Delhi,
Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Chitttor and Kota. The best trains to Ajmer are
the Pink City Express and the Shatabdi Express.
By road: Pushkar is connected by the NH 8 road linking Delhi and
Mumbai. Buses from Ajmer, Jaipur and all nearby places go to Pushkar.
