Gulmarg is a great winter destination which showcases a unique and majestic form with every change of season. Spring here brings with itself lovely flowers and Autumn sees the changing of the leaves from shades of green to flaming red and bright yellows. Even a sitting around the place in magical silence , watching the flames of the bonfire lit near the banks of the streams gives a great sense of delight. Located in the state of Jammu & Kashmir,today, Gulmarg is not merely a mountain resort of exceptional beauty- it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m. Gulmarg looks like a fantasy set in a film and not surprisingly have been the venue of several films.
History
Gulmarg was earlier called as 'Gaurimarg' by the shepherds but later on it was the 16th century Sultan Yusuf Shah, who got inspired by the sight of the grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers and transformed the name of hill station to Gulmarg. It was also a favourite haunt of emperor Jehangir, who once collected about 21 varieties of flowers from here.

Prime Attractions in Gulmarg
Skiing & Heliskiing- Gulmarg is the proud owner of Asia's one of the most famous Heli-skiing resorts. The place also has great slopes for learners , good equipment for hire and well -qualified instructors to teach the right technique.

Golf Courses- Gulmarg also has one of the world's highest green golf courses, as well as a clubhouse, which is a historical building in its own right. For the would-be golfer, there are golf sets on hire, pros to instruct one in the game, and temporary memberships. Naturally, these facilities are available to players as well, except that serious golfers usually carry their sets along.

Gondola Lift- The Gondola Lift will take you up above 15,000 ft and is one of the highest in the world. You can touch the skies and merge with the clouds.

Alpather Lake - This beautiful lake lies across the Apharwat peak and remains frozen even during summers.

Air : The nearest airport to Gulmarg is in Badgam district.
Rail : The Jammu railway station is the closest in the vicinity.
By Road : Gulmarg is 56 kms from Srinagar. Jammu & Kashmir SRTC operates regular deluxe and ordinary bus services from Srinagar. In winter, the buses operate up to Tangmarg (11 kms from Gulmarg), the remaining distance being covered with smaller vehicles. Tourist taxis also operate between Srinagar and Gulmarg.
