Developed by the British as an escape from the heat of the plains,
Mussoorie has now become a premier tourist destination. With its green hills
and varied flora & fauna Mussoorie has been able to capture the hearts
of millions of the tourists. The history of this land dates back to 1827,
when Captain Young, an adventurous military officer, explored the present
site and laid the foundation of this holiday resort. The name of the hill
station got derived from plants of 'Mussoorie' which were found in abundance
here. After its discovery, this hill station gradually developed as a centre
of education, business, tourism and beauty. Apart from its own quiet charm,
Mussoorie also boasts of spectacular views of the
Himalayan.
Hill ridges, irregular in shape and partly wooded, form layer after layer to
the horizon, where snow peaks are very much visible and seems possible for
our reach.
Places Of
Interest
The Kempty Falls Kempty Falls is one of the finest
waterfalls in India. From a great height water cascades down a hill and
dives straight into a plunge pool. There is a dense vegetation in the area
and offers several spectacular sights around.
Lal Tibba - Lal Tibba is located in Landour area which is
the oldest inhabited place in Mussorie and is said to be the highest point
in Mussoorie. The Municipal Corporation of Mussoorie had ordered a Japanese
Telescope which is placed on Lal Tibba. Through this telescope one can have
a lovely view of many peaks.
Gun Hill Gun Hill is the second highest point in
Mussoorie. The place offers immense photographic sights. From Gun Hill
Mussoorie appears to be changing colours every other minute. There are many
shops on the hill top so one can have a small little picnic here. During the
colonial rule, the hill had a gun mounted on top of it, from there it got
the name Gun hill.
Municipal Gardens- The municipal or the Company gardens
was previously (before independence) was also known as Botanical gardens of
Mussoorie. These gardens were laid by famous geologist Dr. H. Fackner in the
last century.
Camel's Back Road - Mussoorie has a beautiful nature walk
known as Camel's Back Road. This road takes its name from
mountain outcrop in the shape of a camel's hump.
Mussoorie Lake This newly developed lake has become
an important picnic spot. It also offers an enchanting view of the Doon
Valley and nearby areas.
Cloud's End Built in the year 1830's this beautiful
destination is a hot favourite of the tourists and is very popular among the
starry eyed honeymooners. The place has a treasure of variety of flora and
fauna.

Air :
The nearest Airport to Mussoorie is 60-kms away from the place. The airport
is called Jollygrant Airport but there are no regular flights to this place.
Rail:
Mussoorie does not have a direct rail link. Dehradun Railway station serves
for Mussoorie too. This station is linked which Superfast trains to other
major cities in country.
Road:
From Dehradun one can hire a taxi or take a bus to Mussoorie. The queen of
hill stations is well connected with roads with other major cities. There
are regular bus services from various metros and other tourist destinations
in Uttaranchal as well as from out side the state. Bus services are provided
by State transports. There are conducted tours to Mussoorie too.
