Palace On Wheels- History
The Train takes you on a seven-day tour of the well traversed Golden
Triangle. In the route the tourists can check out the beautiful and
significant historical monuments that the Golden Triangle has in store for
many-like the palaces of
Rajasthan
and
Taj Mahal of
Agra. Originally the
luxury trains were mostly use by the Maharajas and Viceroys before
Independence but after the country got freedom these lavishly decorated
carriages were declared too elaborate to be used in every day's life and
therefore were abandoned. In 1981, Indian Railways and Rajasthan Tourism
collaborated to bring together and refurbish 13 carriages from various
princely states. On January 26, 1982, the Palace On Wheels was launched as a
special heritage train to offer an experience of a lifetime for all the
tourists visiting India. However in 1991 the heritage train was replaced by
the new air conditioned meter-gauge Palace On Wheels.
