Holiday in Mathura Vrindavan

Mathura
and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh are intimately connected with the life of
Krishna and are considered to be amongst the holiest of pilgrimage sites of
the Hindus. The Gopas shifted to Vrindavan following several calamities at
Gokul. Vrindavan was a lush site, on the banks of the river Yamuna.
Virtually every site in Mathura is associated with legends related to
Krishna. The Dwarkadeesh temple in Mathura is a modern temple. The Gita
Mandir is located on the Mathura Vrindavan road. Gokul near Mathura, is
where Krishna was raised; Mahaban is said to be the seat of the palace of
Nanda, Krishna's foster father. Barsana is said to be the original home of
Radha.
Most temples in the town of Vrindavan are associated with several of the
leelas of Krishna at Vrindavan. Vrindavan became a center of religion from
the 15th century onward. The Ramanuja Sampradaya and the Nimbarka Vishnava
Sampradaya (performing Sankirtans primarily) and the Madhva sampradaya
(which worships Krishna without Radha) , the Vallabha and Chaitanya
traditions are the leading Vaishnava sampradayas here.
Mathura
Mathura is counted among the holiest of cities in India for it was here
that Lord Krishna, the complete incarnation of Vishnu, was born. Situated on
the west bank of river Yamuna, this ancient city abounds in places of
religious and historic interest. It is located at the heart of Brajbhoomi,
145 km south-east of Delhi.
Mathura is adorned with many wonderful temples. The prison cell where
Krishna is believed to have been born still exists. This beautiful Katra
Kesha Dev temple has been built over this and is venerated as the Krishna
janmasthan. Another beautiful temple located on the Mathura-Vrindavan road
is called Gita Mandir. The entire Bhagwad Gita (most sacred book of
Hinduism) is inscribed on its walls. The most beautiful image of Lord
Krishna is in the Dwarkadheesh temple, built in 1815 by a wealthy devotee,
Seth Gokuldas Parikh, Treasurer of the state of Gwalior.
Sacred Waters: Mathura is also the land of some sacred
water sources, called kund. It is believed that Mathura was home to 159
ancient kunds. Of these only four survive today. These include the elegant
Shiv Tal, the famous Potara Kund, the Balbhadra and the Saraswati kund.
Shiva Temples: Although closely associated with the life
