Udaipur Holiday

UdaipurUdaipur is a city as romantic as a dream, with marble palaces gently afloat in a lake surrounded by low lying hills and other impressive palaces dominating the skyline with their many turrets and cupolas, imposing doorways and delicately chiselled windows.

Indeed with it's enchanting palaces surrounded by mirror-like lakes, undulating hills and colourful bazaars, Udaipur looks as though it has been lifted straight from the pages of an Arabian Night's fairy tale book. The hills, the lakes and the altitude give Udaipur an extremely agreeable climate. Probably no other city in Rajasthan is quite as romantic as Udaipur. A visit to Udaipur is a must for travellers who want to experience the unique and vibrant history of Rajasthan.

Tourist Attraction
City Palace This spectacular place stands white and majestic set on a hill. It is surrounded by walls for battlements at the entrance is a triple arched gate, called the Tripolia which was built in 1725. Another monuments which has its own charm is the Suraj Gokhada (the balcony of the sun) Here the Maharanas of Meware came before the people during troubled times to restore confidence in them. The blue and white ceramics of Chini Chitrashala are extremely fascinating.

Jagdish Temple
Located 150 metre north of the entrance to the City Palace, this temple dedicated to lord Vishnu was built in 1651 AD by Maharaja Jagat Singh. It enshrines a black stone image of lord Vishnu as Jagannath - the Lord of the Universe.

Moti Magri
Moti Mangri is basically a complex of gardens situated on the top a hill on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake. Its incorporates three beautiful gardens & a fountain. The view of Fateh Sagar Lake from Moti Mangri is really amazing.

Jagmandir Palace
An island palace, its construction was begun by Maharana Karan Singh, but it takes it's name from Maharana Jagat Singh (1628-1652) who added to it a zenana and named the island Jag Mandir in honour of himself.

Shopping
The colourful state of Rajasthan offers much more than a visitors paradise to the tourist. Shopping in Udaipur is a must and one must not miss the pottery, the articles in stone, clay, leather, wood, ivory, lacquer-wear, glass, brass, silver, gold and textiles. Most are exquisitely handcrafted and worth every coin spent.

Food
Restaurants abound between the City Palace and the Jagdish Temple on the east side of Lake Pichola, catering for all budgets. Many hotels have rooftop terraces and popular restaurants with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare such as Anna, Jagat Niwas, Gyaneshwar Lodge, Fateh Prakash Palace (City Palace) which also serves afternoon English Tea as does Lake Palace, which is expensive and has plush surroundings. (The James Bond movie, Octopussy was shot in both the later locations.)

Best time to visit
The lakes surrounding Udaipur regulates the climate which is pleasant than any other city in Rajasthan. The summers are hot and winters are cold but the temperature does not rise to extremes. The rainfall is less, around 61 cm annually.
