Wedding Holidays
Two bodies, single soul and a promise to be together for seven births
is what make the Indian weddings so very pious.
Marriages are made in heaven but are solemnised on earth- though the
statement sounds cliched it holds great relevance and the sanctity
associated with it is unparallel. They are the most special events in
people's lives. Even in the modern age it is one such tradition that has not
lost its glory and importance in any way. The dances, the rituals, the
ceremonies and the hulla balloo are some of the specialties of the Indian
weddings.Every community in India has its own tradition and styles of
performing a wedding. In fact the religious, regional and cultural diversity
of India is well reflected by the wedding ceremonies.
One of the most important features of the Indian weddings is the Saat Phere
or seven rounds around a pious fire lit for the purpose amidst the Vedic
mantras. Every phera taken holds a specific meaning. Every phera taken holds
a specific meaning. The Saat Phere or the seven steps are as follows:
- The first step is to provide for the household whereby both the bride
and groom promises to keep a pure diet and avoid things that might harm
them.
- In the second step they promise to develop their physical, mental and
spiritual powers.
- In the third step they promise to increase their wealth by proper and
righteous means.
- In the fourth step both of them promise to acquire knowledge,
happiness and harmony by mutual love, respect and trust.
- They take the fifth step so that they are blessed with strong,
virtuous and heroic children.
- They take the sixth step for self restraint and longevity.
- In the seventh step they promise to be true companions and remain
life-long partners by the wedlock.
