Nagarhole
National park derives its name from the combination of two Kannada words.
'Nagar,' meaning snake, and 'hole,' meaning streams. True to its name, a few
serpentine streams flow through the rich tropical forests of the park. This
National Park is one of the oldest national parks in India. It was created
in 1955 and was once maintained as an exclusive hunting preserve for the
Mysore royal family.
The park was declared as a national park in the year 1978 and is close to
both the Bandipur Tiger reserve and the Mudumalai Wildlife sanctuary. This
protected territory is the habitat of several endangered species.
